Licensed individuals who responsible in ensuring that aircraft are airworthy in accordance with local and international aviation standards, these professionals are commonly known as the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME).

Most people become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer by attending a Certified School registered under the National Airworthiness Authority of that country. In what is typically an 18 to 24 month program, they must learn everything that is required for maintenance of a typical airplane. This is followed by an apprenticeship period which usually takes a minimum of 4 years. (Depending on the school attended, a portion of that time may count towards their apprenticeship.)

Students attend approved training 9 weeks a year over a period of 4 years while the student works in industry, on-job training (OJT). This allows the apprentice to complete their training and apprenticeship virtually at the same time.

AMEs must also learn all of the sections of the Local Aviation Regulations which pertain to them. Once the AME has completed this and pass the necessary exams, the AME will be given a Licence Without Type Rating (LWTR) for the relevant trade. In order to be type certified/type rated, AMEs must either go for another exam with the Local Aviation Authority for a specific type aircraft, normally small aircraft (based on aircraft weight); or attend a course and exam with the Quality Assurance Department of an Approved Organization/Airlines, normally for larger aircraft.

The different categories/trades are:

  • Airframe structures
  • Electrical systems
  • Instruments systems
  • Automatic pilots system
  • Radio communication system
  • Radio navigation system
  • Radar system
  • In-flight entertainment (IFE) system
  • Engine system
  • Propeller system

Also, in time, AMEs can advance and diverse to other sides of aircraft maintenance engineering, such as to quality assurance department as inspectors, to maintenance planning department, and so on. Source

  1. Hi, I would like to continue my study in Aircraft Maintenace as I dont have enough money to do piloting. Now, I’ve been receiving Nilai College’s brosure about this course from last month, the problem is, I dont know the ranking of this Nilai College. And whether the certificate issued by the college has its value.

    Thanx

  2. @ mohamed nurhanis
Well for your information, this UC has just been rated under the ‘Very Good’ category in a rating exercise which known as SETARA ’09 [?], and furthermore, the mentioned course, DIPLOMA IN AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING is recognized by the government as well.
Whereas for certificate’s value, this diploma course is incorporating the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) [?] syllabus, hence, graduate should possess rich knowledge which sought by employer.

  3. Well, dnest aviation in subang airport area also offering aircraft maintenance licence program. check it out, because you will be studying in the aviation environment.

  4. hi,i would like 2 continue my futher studies in aircraft maintenance.so i have some question regarding this course.first of all i want to know that in malaysia how is the future for tis career.then i have plan 2 do diploma in nilai university college.so i want to knw that this nilai university college is recognized by malaysia goverment or not.i oso wan to know tat cn i continue master or phd in tis field.cn i continue my master or phd in tis nilai university college?
futhermore sure i cn get job in malaysia if i continue my futher studies in this diploma?

  5. is international college of yayasan melaka’s licence recognised?is it EASA?

  6. Hi, i would like to take licensed aircraft maintenance engineering a my career…and currently, i`m now under the scholarship which only offers mechanical, chemical and electrical course…
Is aircraft maintenance engineering is under `mechanical engineering`??
and what is the diffrnce btween aircraft maintenance and aeronautical engineering???
can i continue aeronautical engineering/aircraft maintenance in the master after ive graduated for degree in mechanical engineering?

  7. Dnest maintenance training academy if im not mistaken is for FELDA people due to its collaboration with MAS, correct me if im wrong. one thing about aircraft training maintenance school is that they are no such thing as the ‘best’ school at all. If some1 asked me which is the best school, my answer would be to join up courses offered by MAS, AirAsia.. an aircraft operator *airliner* is still the best place to get urself with approved aircraft licensed.

one problem for all the training school mentioned including KYM Intnl are at the end of the course which is to get a type rating. there is no way for the school to give u a type rating unless they have a live aircraft that flies. only an airliner has dat. for more info, go to flylah.com

  8. Hallo sir.now im doing level 3 in ADVANCE AERONAUTICS TRAINING CENTRE. so my question is which collage can i do diploma in aircraft engineering?

  9. hei,,, my nephew who is a Singaporean is hoping to find a suitable college and facilities to study aircraft engineering or pilot,,, is it possible for a singaporean to do so in malaysia

  10. hye.. i just want 2 know.. what the different between
Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Composite)
Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Manufacturing)
Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Avionics).. anyone can explain 4 me??

  11. Quote shahidah

Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Composite)
    – composite materials and components of material based like aircraft structure, interior and exterior

Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Manufacturing)
    – manufacturing in aircraft maintenace would involve parts, components and assembly of moving and non-moving parts within an aircraft

Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Avionics)..
    – avionics is the electrics, communication and electronics within an aircraft system.

Advise to check the programme and syllabus before enrolling. It is critical to know that the laboratory and workshops are equipped with the relevant and updated industrial based equipment.

  12. Top Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering Universities and Colleges in Malaysia - University-Malaysia.com says:

[…] often informally called rocket science. Note: Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering is not similar to aircraft maintainance engineering. referenceBelow is a list of universities where you can study aerospace/aeronautical engineering in […]

  13. hey…i wanna know about the career prospect after doing aircraft maintenance engineering and can i work for airasia or MAS

    n…..
is it better to do aeronautical engineering or AME based on job opportunity

  14. hello .i have (747 -300&200&100&sp)also (737 )ALSO (MD 82-83)MECHANIC B1 CERTIFICATED . HOW CAN I CHANGE IRANIAN DOCUMENT TO INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENT .THANKS

  15. Dear, Nizam,

Dnest Aviation Training Centre, FYI, is not in collaboration with any company. It has 3 hangars of its own, housing more than 20 over private and corporate jets. It has more than 20 Years experience in aviation. AND it is NOT just for FELDA students. we offer CAAi UK EASA part 66 courses and in process of acquiring a college status. They also have recently signed a MoU with a UK University for degree courses and that University is a EASA Part-147 certified university which allow their students to complete 2-3yrs of academic training and 2-3yrs of work schedule. At Nilai UC, u need to comple 3 yrs of education and 5 yrs of work experience. The MoU dnest signed with the UK university will come in effect once they have got their college status, which i think should be next year Jan (not sure). Then, the degree cert will be issued by UK not Dnest.

Pls get ur facts right before commenting in the future. tq.

  16. how much is the cost to attend the aircraft maintainance?
my brother is very interested to join but if the cost is sky high he will totally in dept for many years, so we feel a bit burden about it.

when is the next enroll time?

  17. Hi! I have completed B.Sc in EEE from Bangladesh. Now I want to study diploma in aviation or aeronautical in Malaysia. Now i need the details information with if any chance to get scholarship.

trust me, UniKL MIAT is the best place to study Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in Malaysia.
It is under MARA and for bumiputra, ure eligible to ask for MARA educational loan.

im in the fourth semester and everything is running good
    😀

  20. Dear Zaililah, Sagir..

    Cost in MIAT

    Diploma – RM45,000 (3 years)

    Degree:
    1) Aviation Management: RM 64,000 (4 years)

  23. IEDC is a new college which located at SStwo Mall,PJ. The college is offering Aircraft Maintenace Technology. I visited their booth last weekend at FACON, KLCC. Not bad, additional option for those who want to do the Dip in Aircraft Engineering . The syllabus is prepare the students to B1.1 and B2. The overall programme course fees is about +/- RM40k and RM6K++ for EASA exam.

yea..the college going to launch the Dip in Mechanical in May and discount of 20% on tuition fees will be given to 1st 25 early birds. Additional selling point : they will provide the Professional Course for Oil and Gas Refinery Plant Design to students before go for OJT.

    I just visited their place yesterday……..wow………..RED 🙂

  24. HYE…Nw me doin Certificate in Engineering at Tafe Collage….

My question is after finish certificate me can continue Diploma Aircraft Engineering at Nilai College…?

    Please help me…..

  25. well, you can go to Nilai UC or IEDC.
Please do some study on both colleges and check on their strenghts. Example: Category that provided, lecturers’ quality and EASA examination partner. now the market demand is avionics.

  26. Hello sir iam call the management of the university to see how we can help me about this loand education please help me

  27. What is the difference between doing aeronautical engineering in IPTA (UTM, UIAM, etc) and doing the AME (MIAT, TAFE, etc). Are they teaching the same thing? And what are the career prospect for both?

  28. Hi Sade,

As i know some of the polytechnics do offer Aircraft Maintenance but the category level just up to level A. It is a basic level. UTHO just started the aeronautical department and please refer their webpage.

Anyway the most of the IPTS are work more closely with the External examination bodies e.g. DCA for Malaysia License or EASA for international license. It is advisable to take the external examination together with the academic programme. It’s can save your time.

Do check what are the categories that they are offerting, B1.1 or B2. Also, please check on the lecturers experience, OJT partners and also overall cost. Some institutions use to misleading students by only showing the tuition fees in the structure. Some other hidden fees will charge to you later when you joining the college.

I went to IEDC as recommended. Do drop by their place at PJ and talk to their department head.

  29. hello,
can i know the difference between the Diploma in Aircraft Engineering and Diploma in Aerospace Engineering? and may i know the SPM qualification of Diploma in Aerospace Engineering..i hope you can help me as my friends and i are making a research about Aerospace Engineering.
    tq !

  30. hii,,
what is the eligibility criteria to join the AME… & WHAT are the scopes in future after joining this..???

  31. The pioneer in Malaysia is TAFE. Currently they are moving into EASA syllabus. The 3 year Diploma is fully accredited by MQA. There is MARA loan and PTPTN. The programme is good and the staff are good too. In a Diploma you need sound basics and good command of English language. They are going to offer EASA exam coaching soon. Nice place. I am in Year 2. I can afford to pay as the fee is affordable.

  32. For your info, the founder for the Aircraft programme is Mr. Kunalan and now he is in IEDC, Petaling Jaya.

The programme is designed by him and now has been revised to better version so that can meet the market needs and expose students to latest issues.

The diploma programme can be finished within 2 years and 3 months and you no need to spend more time on the academic duration. It is good that you can finish the programme ASAP and join to employment to gain the working experience and put in the log book.

IEDC programme structure do prepare students for EASA exam in B.1.1 and B2. Students who enrolled to this programmes are eligible to apply for PTPTN loan too.

Also, their modern workshop with aircraft is coming soon. Wait for the surprise!

  33. Hi, I have just finished my SPM last year and passed with flying colours.. So my interest is in aeronautics……and as I was going thru the net I found that International College of Yayasan Melaka offers this programm….. So my question is, Is that college recognized or the licence??? I really need to know…pls help me….

  34. Hi I have finished my practical in aeroplane maintenance … so I let me know the colledge in Kuching Sarawak recognized the licence in aeroplane maintenance.
